Introduction

This statement of purpose was drafted by the Board of Directors and staff to help
explain to the community why Buckeye Community Services was incorporated.
Buckeye Community Services was incorporated in June of 1977 for the following
purposes:

GOAL #1:  TO PROVIDE RESIDENTIAL SERVICES

To develop a continuous (wide-range) of residential services, that are consistent
with the agency's philosophical principles, for individuals with developmental
disabilities in the counties of Jackson, Pike, Meigs, Vinton, Gallia, Athens and
Hocking. A wide variety of small residences helps people live as independently as
possible in the community and ensures that people are appropriately placed.
Small residences provide typical community living experiences which are more
supportive than out-of-way environments that were created in the past.  This
system of small homes and residences promotes individuals having the chance of
moving through the system and learning to live as independently as possible.

GOAL #2:  TO BE AN ADVOCATE

To defend and support the belief that every person has the right to realize his or
her potential in the community.  We believe that board members, staff members,
clients and their families should advocate on the local and state level, to help
insure that people with developmental disabilities are not denied this right.

GOAL #3: TO WORK WITH EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS AND OTHER
SERVICE PROVIDERS

To work with educational institutions and other service providers to help develop
professionals in the field of developmental disabilities.

GOAL #4:  TO EDUCATE THE COMMUNITY

To educate the community to the meaning of developmental disabilities and to
convey the idea that all people are valuable, individual human beings.  To share
the belief that people with developmental disabilities have talents, skills and much
to offer, and that the most normalized environment for persons with handicaps is
the community
