BUCKEYE COMMUNITY SERVICES
STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY
Organizations, as well as people, should attempt to use a set of
beliefs to guide its actions. Buckeye Community Services'
philosophic principles are generic. In other words, many social
services agencies and individuals share our philosophic principles.
The principles are broad and focus on people, rather than on
individuals with a specific disability or characteristic. The agency's
philosophic principles are:
1) Handicapped people have the same rights as others. This is a
basic and central belief to the staff and board of Buckeye
Community Services.
2) All individuals are capable of growth and development.
It is essential that you truly believe that all people, particularly those
with a developmental disability, are capable of growth and
development. It has been the prevailing attitude in the community
that all handicapped people cannot learn and grow and develop.
3) All individuals have an inalienable right to grow and develop and
to reach their potential.
4) Individuals have the right to self-determination. We define this to
mean that individuals have the right to make decisions and to
participate in their habilitation. Control over one's life is one of our
most cherished ideals. We must ensure that developmentally
disabled people also have this right.
